Polymarket US has agreed to stop offering new sports-related event contracts to customers in Michigan, under a court-approved stipulation with the Michigan Gaming Control Board. The operator must close any open positions held by Michigan residents by the end of Nov. 25, unless customers close them first.
The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan approved the agreement, the board said on Oct. 28. Michigan agreed not to pursue enforcement action against QCX LLC, which does business as Polymarket US, provided the company complies with the stipulation.
The deal resolves the immediate enforcement issue without ending Polymarket’s federal challenge to Michigan’s gaming laws. Polymarket sued state officials in March to block enforcement, but the court denied its request for a temporary restraining order that month and rejected a preliminary injunction in June. Its appeal of the injunction ruling remains before the Sixth Circuit.
Michigan’s attorney general warned Polymarket on Sept. 10 that the state would bring legal action unless it stopped offering sports-related contracts to residents. The state characterises such products as unlicensed sports wagering presented as federally regulated prediction markets, while it and the gaming board say sports wagering must be offered through properly licensed and regulated operators.
Attorney General Dana Nessel said the action held the national sports-betting industry to Michigan law and was intended to ensure that gaming occurred with statutory consumer protections and safeguards. Henry Williams said operators seeking to offer sports wagering to Michigan residents need a Michigan licence.
Polymarket is the latest company to reach a Michigan agreement or face a court order restricting sports-event contracts this year. The state previously secured similar arrangements with Robinhood Derivatives and Coinbase Financial Markets, while KalshiEX was subject to a state-court preliminary injunction. Coinbase agreed on Oct. 7 to stop new Michigan sports contracts and close outstanding customer positions by Oct. 10.
